Best Colors for Your Skin Tone

Skin tone has two parts: depth (fair, light, medium, deep) and undertone (cool, neutral, warm, olive). The best colors for your skin tone come from both together — which is why a "colors for dark skin" list alone never quite works.

Pick your depth and undertone in the chart below to see clothing colors that usually flatter that combination.

Occasions

What color dress is best for my skin tone?

For a dress — including a wedding dress — the color sits right next to your face and arms, so undertone matters most. Wedding dress white is a good example: pure white flatters cool undertones, ivory and champagne flatter warm ones, and soft white or off-white suits neutral skin.

For other dresses, choose a medium-depth color from your column in the chart. Save the very light and very dark shades for skirts, trousers and shoes.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions people ask most about this topic.

Olive, teal, terracotta, plum, forest, burgundy and camel. Pastel yellow and very bright orange are harder.

Medium teal, dusty rose, denim, jade, berry and off-white — colors that are not strongly warm or cool.

What are cool toned colors?

Colors with a blue base: navy, cobalt, emerald, raspberry, rose, lavender, gray and pure white.
